GENERAL, CARE, TIPS & TRICKS

Inhaler for horses

Respiratory diseases in horses are the second most common reason for the diagnosis "unrideable". A walk through the stable aisles of many riding stables confirms the results of a study: one in four horses coughs or has other respiratory problems.

The causes of acute and chronic respiratory diseases in horses can be manifold and unfortunately there is no panacea. However, inhalation can be used as a supportive and preventative treatment for horses with respiratory diseases. NEBU-TEC has developed an inhaler for horses - the SaHoMa®-II inhalation set - based on its many years of expertise in human medicine and in collaboration with vets.

NEBU-TEC develops the 1st battery-powered inhaler for horses

  • From 1996: Inhalation devices for humans
  • 2005: first tubular and cordless inhalation mask for horses SaHoMa (=Safety Horse Mask)
  • Active ingredient is nebulised directly into the upper and lower respiratory tract
  • Aerosol is delivered almost silently directly to the horse's nostrils
  • SaHoMa has been continuously developed and improved since its launch
  • with the help of vets, therapists and horse owners of sick horses

What are the benefits of inhalation with the SaHoMa®-II?

  • recreates the salty sea air of the coast
  • Uncomplicated, simple and can be carried out by yourself
  • Inhalation with medication for acute illnesses
  • Closed mask prevents the active ingredient from being lost to the ambient air
  • Removal of mucus can be promoted
  • damaged mucous membranes can regenerate

Facts about the inhaler

  • Capacity: 17 ml
  • Material: Makrolon = transparent, biocompatible, robust and hard-wearing
  • Droplet size: 3.92 µm MMAD → mass fraction < 5 µm = approx. 45 %.
  • Capacity: 0.8 ml NaCl / minute
  • Fit: different sized sealing rings allow the mask to be customised

How is the SaHoMa®-II inhalation mask fitted?

How do I get my horse used to the inhalation mask?

  • Find a quiet place in the stable corridor and be relaxed yourself
  • Give your horse time to get used to the seal ring on the nose
  • Also slip the housing over the nostrils and give your horse time to get used to the feeling
  • Carefully put the filter membrane and basket on until they click into place
  • Attach the remaining parts and start the inhalation process as soon as your horse stands calmly
  • If your horse gets restless in between, you can take him for a relaxed walk

Which inhalation solutions can be nebulised in the SaHoMa®-II and which cannot?

It is recommended and pointed out that you should only use inhalation solutions that are also approved for inhalation or have been tested and approved by NEBU-TEC. You can request a detailed list of medications directly from NEBU-TEC.

Inhalation with the following solutions is not recommended:

  • Sterile or distilled water: Sterile and / or distilled water does not contain salt. Because of this, cells absorb water molecules, which then swell and in extreme cases the cells can burst.
  • Brine with a concentration above 3.5%: When inhaling in a mask nebuliser such as the SaHoMa®-II, the salt concentration of the brine should not exceed 3.5%. The higher the salt concentration of the inhalation solution, the stronger the irritant effect may be.
  • Essential oils: In horses, inhalation of essential oils can lead to irritation of the mucous membranes and even bronchospasms. You should therefore never nebulise essential oils in the SaHoMa®-II or any other inhaler. Essential oils have such an extreme effect that even robust and hard-wearing materials such as plastic or the nebuliser unit can be damaged beyond repair.

How do I clean the SaHoMa®-II inhalation set?

For hygienic reasons, thorough cleaning after the inhalation procedure is very important. In this way, the inhalation set is always ready for use and can be used quickly in an acute case. Thorough cleaning also prevents infection from horse to horse. Disassembling the inhalation set is recommended for this purpose.

A detailed description of the cleaning process can be found in the instructions for use.
